Fiel a sus convicciones, tuvo un fuerte compromiso con Latinoam\u00e9rica, con los humildes, con los oprimidos.<br \/>\nEra uruguayo pero tambi\u00e9n nuestro, porque no pueden separarnos del pa\u00eds vecino circunstancias mezquinas y arbitrarias.<br \/>\nQuiz\u00e1s haya sido muy conocido por su novela \u00abLa tregua\u00bb, llevada al cine por Sergio Ren\u00e1n como director, con la actuaci\u00f3n de H\u00e9ctor Alterio y Ana Mar\u00eda Picchio, en los roles de Mart\u00edn Santom\u00e9 y Laura Avellaneda. Una novela de oficinistas, de hombres y  mujeres comunes, impregnada de amor.<br \/>\nHe le\u00eddo muchas de sus obras. Destaco \u00abGracias por el fuego\u00bb, con el gran personaje de Ram\u00f3n Budi\u00f1o, arroj\u00e1ndose al vac\u00edo en su desesperaci\u00f3n por  ser el hijo del poco escrupuloso magnate Edmundo Budi\u00f1o.<br \/>\n\u00abEn el pa\u00eds de la cola de paja\u00bb, \u00abCon y sin nostalgia\u00bb, \u00abPrimavera con una esquina rota\u00bb, y tantos libros de poemas, muchos de ellos musicalizados por Serrat en \u00abEl sur tambi\u00e9n existe\u00bb, o bien por Daniel Viglietti.<br \/>\nHombre comprometido y coherente, sensible, t\u00edmido, Benedetti permaneci\u00f3 fiel a sus ideales. Defendi\u00f3 la liberaci\u00f3n de los pueblos, y a su manera luch\u00f3 con palabras para que Am\u00e9rica Latina crezca.<br \/>\nUn gran hombre, un gran poeta, un excelente prosista.
